Creating a Bootable macOS El Capitan USB Drive

When it comes to installing or upgrading macOS, having a bootable USB drive can be a lifesaver. In this step-by-step guide, we'll show you how to create a bootable El Capitan USB drive using TransMac software.

Step 1: Download and Install TransMac Software

To start the process, you need to download and install TransMac software on your PC. Visit the official TransMac website and download the latest version of the software. Once downloaded, double-click on the setup file to run the installer and get it installed on your machine.

Step 2: Download and Install TransMac Software

As mentioned earlier, TransMac is a paid software, but you can use its 15-day trial copy to prepare a bootable USB drive without any issues. Visit this page of TransMac and download the latest version of TransMac software on your PC.

Step 3: Run TransMac as Administrator

Once installed, run TransMac software as administrator. To do so, navigate to Start menu, right-click on TransMac entry, and then click 'Run as administrator' option. Alternatively, type 'TransMac' in the Start menu search box, right-click on TransMac entry in search results, and then click 'Run as administrator' option.

Step 4: Connect Your USB Drive

In the left pane of the program, you will see the connected USB drive that you want to use to prepare a macOS bootable USB. Make sure your USB drive is properly connected to your PC before proceeding further.

Step 5: Format Your USB Drive

Clicking Yes button will open the 'Format Drive for Mac' dialog box where you need to type a name for the drive. Before transferring the DMG file to the USB drive, we need to partition the USB drive with GPT partition first. This is because if you have been using a USB flash drive with Windows operating system, the USB drive is likely using MBR partition type.

Right-click on the USB drive and then click 'Format Disk for Mac' option. Click Yes button when you see the warning dialog box.
